If you’ve got a Birmingham Family Photography session coming up with your toddler, take a deep breath—and get excited! Around here, we don’t do stiff poses or forced smiles. My approach as a Birmingham family photographer is all about making the experience feel like a fun, relaxed playdate (with a little extra sunshine and a camera in hand).
In fact, many of the best moments we capture happen in between the “say cheese!” ones—when your little one is twirling, exploring, or laughing in your arms.

So if you’re wondering how to get ready, here are a few happy little tips to make it smooth, fun, and full of magic:
1. Talk It Up Like It’s Something Special
The day before, let your toddler know something exciting is coming:
“Guess what? Tomorrow, we get to play outside with Mrs. Elle and take pictures together!”
Keeping things light and upbeat helps them know this is something fun—not something to perform for. I’ll guide everything gently so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
2. Plan for Their Happy Time
We’ll aim for your toddler’s best time of day—usually after a nap and snack. (Happy bellies = happy smiles.) I always build in a little buffer time, so there’s no pressure if you need a minute to settle in or hand out some fruit snacks.

3. Dress Them in Something They Can Wiggle In
For your Birmingham Family Photography Session, Think soft, comfy, and sweet. Classic pieces in simple colors always photograph beautifully. 4. Bring a Familiar Toy or Lovey (Optional, but Adorable)
If your little one has a favorite stuffed animal or blankie, it’s totally okay to bring it along. Sometimes having something familiar nearby gives them a little confidence boost—and honestly, those little comfort items can be the sweetest detail to capture.
5. Expect Play, Not Posing
My sessions are super relaxed. We’ll play, explore, snuggle, and let your child be themselves. There’s no pressure to sit perfectly or smile on command—those natural, joy-filled moments are exactly what I’m looking for. You just get to show up, love on your people, and let the magic unfold.
6. Let Me Handle the Rest
You don’t need to direct or worry—really. I’ve photographed so many toddlers (and have one of my own!), and I come prepared with games, songs, and tricks to keep things fun and flowing. You just get to enjoy the moment.
